KUMBATIA: safety and empowerment for young mothers & their babies

DONATE

Our
Mission

Kumbatia is a non-profit organization that provides children from the slums with safety, nutrition, and education. We work to empower young, single mothers who are returning to work or school after giving birth. By providing free childcare we ensure that women can get an education, or work to provide for their families, knowing that their children are safe, loved, and well cared for.

Our Focus

We help children, families, and communities break the cycle of poverty by empowering people of all ages to dream, aspire and achieve.

SAFETY

At Kumbatia we work to find the most at-risk children and ensure that they are safe and off the streets. Many girls in the slums around Kumbatia get pregnant very young and are forced to drop out of school to care for their babies. Most women either leave their babies home alone while they try to work, or give their babies up to an orphanage simply because they can't afford to care for them. By providing free childcare, older children are able to go to school rather than attend to their younger siblings, young mothers are able to finish their education, and all parents are able to work so they may support their families. Our mamas have peace of mind knowing that their babies will be fed, loved, and still there when they return home at night.

NUTRITION

Recently we started a feeding outreach program through Kumbatia. We are working with local schools, and the families in our program to locate children and families in need of help. Many children in the slums around Kumbatia don't know where their next meal will come from. They wake up every morning not knowing if they will eat that day or if they will go hungry. Our goal is to change that. Children in our feeding program will come to Kumbatia every day for lunch, and will be sent home with extra food for their families. Visit the "feeding program" page to learn more about this program and how you can help support it.

EMPOWERMENT

We are working with local women through fair trade practices to implement programs that encourage sustainability and growth. In partnership with our mamas we sell products made by them and other local women, with proceeds going back to them to benefit their families. We also offer weekly support groups for our mamas where they come together to discuss hardships they are facing, and get insight and advice from the other mamas in the program. We encourage and empower them to complete their education, and help them in any ways we can. Our mamas are superheroes, and we are so lucky to know them and love them.

EDUCATION

At Kumbatia we believe that education is power. By providing a nonprofit daycare, we allow young mothers (often 12-15 years old) to return to school, knowing that their children are safe. When the children at Kumbatia turn 3 we find them sponsors and pay for them to go to school. We support the kids in the program as long as their mamas feel they need our help. Sponsoring a child is the most rewarding thing you can do. Knowing that because of you a child is receiving 3 meals a day, clean water, and an education. Sponsors will receive periodic updates on the child they sponsor including photos. Check out our sponsorship page to see how just $35 a month can provide an education for a child.
