Feeding Program

Recently we decided to expand our outreach program by offering lunch at Kumbatia for some local kids. We are working with local schools, and families in our program to identify families in need. Many families in the slums around Kumbatia don't have money to buy food. As a result, many children in the area are malnourished. Imagine waking up every morning, not knowing if you will eat that day, or how many days it will be before you have a meal. Many of our Kumbatia families have told us that before they started bringing their children they would often go 3+ days without eating. Many of these families also don't have access to clean water, and have to walk miles to access it. The head teacher at our school let us know that there are some kids there who are severely malnourished, and as a result are falling behind in school. These kids are always tired and lethargic, and don't have the energy to fuel their brains to learn. They also miss a lot of school, and often skip entire terms because their mothers can't afford the fees. We will start by adding a few kids to the program, and if it goes well and we can continue to gain funding we will gradually add more kids. These kids will come to Kumbatia every afternoon during lunch, and eat a meal. We will also send them home with containers of food to ensure that their families have dinner every night. We will provide clean water for them at Kumbatia, and to take back to school, and we will make sure their families have access to clean water at home. We hope that in the future we can expand this program to help as many families as possible, because every child deserves to know where their next meal will come from.
